Sean Hamilton’s Story: Staying Focused on the Road to Self-Employment

 When Sean Hamilton joined the Momentic programme in November, he already had a clear vision of what he wanted to achieve. His goal was to launch a mobile car valeting business, providing professional vehicle cleaning services to customers and businesses across Gainsborough and the surrounding areas.

While Sean had a clear plan for his business, his journey wasn’t without its challenges. Having previously experienced difficulties with his mental health, and while supporting his partner through health issues, self-employment offered him the opportunity to build a career that provided greater flexibility for his personal circumstances.

Before joining Momentic, Sean had enrolled on a business support course elsewhere. However, after meeting with his Business Adviser, Julie, he quickly realised the personalised support available through Momentic was exactly what he needed and chose to continue his journey with us.

Working closely with Julie, Sean developed his business, prepared for self-employment and accessed start-up funding to help cover essential costs, including marketing materials and business insurance.

Although Sean faced setbacks along the way, including challenges with the Jobcentre and a delay in being recognised as Gainfully Self-Employed (GSE), he never let these obstacles distract him from his goal. He continued to build his customer base, refine his services and stay focused on growing his business.

His determination paid off when he successfully achieved Gainfully Self-Employed (GSE) status in March, allowing him to fully focus on developing his business.

Today, Sean runs a successful mobile car valeting business, travelling by bike to provide professional vehicle cleaning services for both individual and business customers. When we last caught up with him, his business was going from strength to strength, with a growing customer base and a bright future ahead.

Sean’s story is a fantastic example of how resilience, determination and the right support can help turn an idea into a successful business. Despite facing personal and professional challenges, he remained focused on his vision from day one and continues to build a business he can be proud of.
