Introduction

The Team at Momentic has a strong background and experience of delivering specialist Enterprise Skills and Self-employment support services through HMPPS and in partnership with like-minded organisations and through the support of key stakeholders for over 20 years.

Our Core Service Approach

We develop and deliver tailored models of services, subject to prison category and the prisoner population, including a range of SFEDI Awards qualifications. Our support continues through linked progression routes, such as CFO and MoJ DPS contracted provision, to support the participants in our programme through the gate.

We often support an offender through to our UK wide Community Provision and DWP Programmes for additional support from our Specialist Central Support Service Team and have created strategic and operational partnerships to further add value and SMART progression routes.

Momentic Programme of Support Through the HMPPS Dynamic Purchasing System

Momentic are the chosen specialist self-employment provider within three Prisons and our CEO Ian Carlier also sits on the Employment Advisery Boards (EAB) to offer specialist advice and support around routes to sustainable self-employment.

  • HMP Sudbury
  • HMP Whatton
  • HMP Onley

Our programmes are to support the self-employment aspirations of offenders from ideas and transferable skills, all the way through the gate on release into sustainable self-employment.

This programme of individually tailored support is achieved through a number of interventions, action-based approaches and a UK wide network of continued support, to include:

On the ‘in’ through

  • ideas generation,
  • 1:1 coaching
  • workshops including marketing, social media and tax.

Through the gate, working closely with the CIAG, JCP, OMU, Education Through the Gate Hub (TTGH) and wider partners to:

  • Develop realistic SMART action plans to progress towards self-employment.
  • Create a clear understanding of tax history.
  • Engage with the correct agencies to support transition.

In the Community through engagement with our Central Support Service Team to:

  • Formalise the actioned approach.
  • Register as self-employed or as a business (legals and legislation)
  • Identify specific self-employment support in the community with either Momentic delivery or better placed support organisations across the UK
  • Have a sounding board and continued support service whilst starting and sustaining and to potentially ‘grow’

Ian Carlier CEO:  ‘Since delivering my first full self-employment support service at HMP Swinfen YOI back in 1999 and services to over 30 prisons and probation services since then, until the pandemic hit, we are back with a full end to end service at HMP Sudbury. We have also developed a complete through the gate approach to sustained self-employment across the UK in an operational and strategic partnership with Entrepreneurs Unlocked and The Tax Academy with a further 5 prisons.

Momentic and HMP Leyhill Prison Programme

Momentic are also the chosen specialist self-employment provider within Leyhill Prison in partnership with Shaw Trust.

The “Self-employment – Could it be me?”  project is funded via HM Prison & Probation Service Co-financing Organisation (HMPPS CFO). HMPPS CFO is a European Social Fund resettlement support programme which delivers projects aimed at improving employability, which are seen as key to changing lives and reducing reoffending. To learn more about the work of HMPPS CFO, please visit https://www.co-financing.org/

Our programme within Leyhill is an Intensive Business Support service, with the addition of SFEDI Awards and IOEE recognised qualification awarded to prisoners who have successfully completed the programme and coordinated referrals from the lead partner team from Shaw Trust.

This programme of support includes a through the gate provision and our central team picking up the support to help launch the business and create enablers for sustainment and growth.

IOEE and SFEDI Qualifications

SFEDI is the first dedicated Awarding Organisation specialising in business enterprise and business support and so sits perfectly with our credentials.

IOEE is the UK’s only dedicated learning institute providing recognition, accreditation and qualifications in enterprise learning.

Momentic is now an approved IOEE and SFEDI Awards centre, which means that we have now become a certified centre to award recognised qualifications to programme participants and wider provision through our status with the institute. The qualifications will be initially delivered within our justice programmes but we are also building programmes to support wider customer groups in the community who will value a structured approach, that a qualification brings, to developing their ideas into sustainable businesses.

To become a SFEDI Awards Centre and an IOEE accredited organisation requires a high amount of commitment and knowledge of the industry. Our CEO first started working in partnership with the SFEDI Group back in the 1990’s and fully understands and supports the need for the standards setting approach to our business support sector.
