Nick Baker – IT & Technical Support
‘Nick Baker’s Story: Turning Tech Experience into a Business
After building a career in the games industry, Nick Baker found himself considering a new direction. He had thought about starting his own business for some time, but like many people at the beginning of their self-employment journey, he wasn’t quite sure where to start.
After applying for roles across both the gaming and wider technology sectors, Nick found the current job market challenging. Repeated applications with little or no response became increasingly discouraging, and the idea of creating something of his own began to feel like a genuine alternative.
However, taking that first step into self-employment was daunting. There were lots of unknowns and plenty to learn about turning his experience and skills into a viable business.
That began to change when Nick attended an introductory presentation about the Momentic programme. Seeing the guidance and support available gave him the confidence to start exploring his idea properly and begin putting plans in place.
Turning an idea into a plan
Nick was matched with Business Adviser Emma, whose support has played an important role in helping him navigate the early stages of starting his business.
Rather than trying to tackle everything at once, Emma helped Nick understand what needed his attention immediately, what he should begin thinking about for the future and what could wait until his business was further established.
Using practical advice, personal experience and real-world examples, she helped make the process of becoming self-employed feel much more manageable.
One of the biggest lessons for Nick has been the importance of being proactive. From promoting his services to continually looking for new opportunities, he has learned that building a business means putting yourself out there rather than simply waiting for customers to arrive.
And that approach is already producing results.
Nick has now secured his first customer, with a potential second opportunity also on the horizon.
Ambitious plans for the future
With the foundations in place, Nick is now focused on growing his Home Tech business and building a strong customer base. His ambition is to grow to the point where he eventually needs additional staff to help meet demand.
But his plans don’t stop there.
Once the Home Tech side of the business is established, Nick hopes to expand his services to sole traders and small limited companies, using his technology experience to help them improve workflows and automate repetitive tasks.
Longer term, he hopes to develop a third area of the business providing consultancy to larger organisations, helping them improve processes, increase efficiency and make better use of automation.
From uncertainty to a clear direction
Nick’s journey has already come a long way. What started as an idea during a difficult period of job searching has developed into a business with its first customer, a structured growth plan and an ambitious vision for the future.
Most importantly, the process has given Nick greater confidence in what he can achieve.
With Emma’s guidance, he has been able to turn a vague ambition into practical, achievable steps and develop a much clearer picture of where he wants to take his business.
Nick’s experience is a great reminder that you don’t need to have everything figured out before you begin. Sometimes, trying something new, asking for support and taking that first step can be the beginning of something much bigger.’
